The Endless All-Nighter Working diligently under the unwritten rule that Saturday night doesn’t stop until your head hits the pillow, Matador Club Country Music (known simply as “The Matador”) is one of Toronto’s few juke joint-esque taverns, only opening its doors until virtually every other beverage establishment is announcing last call. The Party’s Started…Keep It Going! In fact, the ages-old music and spirits venue – started in the late 1960s – is known amongst locals at the place to continue the party when every other alehouse has hung up the last pitcher to dry. Watching the convoy of taxis pull up to the monumental red building around 2 a.m., one instantly sees The Matador for the keeper of after-hours nightlife that it is, seemingly busier than an airport terminal. A Bevy Of Beautful Baskers Thanks to an all-are-welcome policy, many different shades of Toronto nightlife frequent The Matador, providing a wonderful cross-section of punks, rockers, club kids, celebrities (the likes of Stompin’ Tom Connors, Blue Rodeo and Neko Case have been seen filtering through the doors on more than one occasion), tourists and curious locals to mingle, create new friendships and possibly kindle romantic endeavours. Not Wakin’ Up The Neighbours All of this taking place amongst the weathered floorboards in this converted temple which may sound strange, but is nowhere near as shocking as its locale. While one would imagine The Matador to be bouncing away in the heart of Toronto’s club district, it is in fact quietly tucked away amongst a throng of family homes and quiet side streets. The Matador (and the ensuing hopping nightlife within) are quite respectful to their neighbours, keeping the noise to a dull roar, thereby maintaining a positive community relationship. For 35 years, the Matador has catered to Toronto's late-night revellers, country music lovers and night owls. The Matador is a club with a difference, owned as it is by Ann Dunn, a grandmother with a penchant for running an all-night country & western club.
