Entertainment Family Since it was founded in 1987, the Liberty Entertainment Group has developed an impressive roster of entertainment venues and restaurants in downtown Toronto. One of the most noteworthy venues is the Phoenix Concert Theatre, established in 1991 to introduce multi-room, multi-format club nights. The Velvet Underground arrived in 1995 at its Queen Street address, and hosted the CD Release Party for Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill album. Other venues include the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex at Exhibition Place, Rose Water Supper Club and Casa Loma.
Welcoming All Nouveau Goths The Velvet Underground venue features alternative rock in an intimate environment. The eclectic spot has previously showcased Canadian bands like Junkhouse and Crawl, as well as outrageous fashion shows such as Genitorture. The club caters to alternative types and university preps, playing a mix of ‘80s goth and retro music. The décor emphasizes weird and cool, with sculptures of angels crafted from random metal pieces, mixed with lush lounging furniture.
Weekly Clubbing The club welcomes goths and punks five out of seven days a week, who come to head-bang on the dance floor, play billiards or relax with their friends. Full Tilt Wednesdays have Tina Sixx and DJ Quito spinning punk, alternative and retro ‘90s. Second Renaissance Thursdays feature alternative rock with DJ Osaze. DJ Jay and Terry play both retro and new rock on Fridays, while DJ Joe adds some hip hop to the rock mix on Saturdays. Sundays are reserved for DJ Oz and the staple brew of alternative and retro.
